Sewing on knits-Always use a ball point needle. Make sure that the size you are using is appropriate for the weight and number of layers you are sewing through.
If you are putting in eyelets, closures, zippers, or have areas that need extra support consider using a layer of twill tape or grosgrain ribbon. This will act as support, reduce the possibility of the stitches tearing out.
Most of the newer fancy machines have specific stitches designed for stretch fabrics. If your machine doesn't have that option, you can use a very narrow zig zag stitch to provide a bit of give.
