Far-Out Fabrics
Procion Dyes-- For Tiedye and vat-dying

It's sale time! 25% off EVERYTHING we sell until September 7, 2008! The price you see on the website will be discounted when you check out. Cool, huh? For more details, check out the sale info page.

About these dyes!

We sell Procion MX dyes. They come as a powder to which you add water. They are fiber reactive dyes-- which means that they actually change the color of the fiber, as opposed to staining or sitting on top of the fiber. When used correctly, they are permanent, colorfast and washable. ProcionMX dyes work very well on cotton, rayon, linen or hemp. They are available in a wide range of colors, but can also be mixed if you are trying to match a color. Soda Ash is the fixative used for these dyes. (Note: We have dyes for other types of fabric. If you are dyeing something other than cotton, linen, rayon or hemp, check out our fabric dyes page. It may hold the answer to your burning questions!)

Methods

There are lots of different ways to use Procion Dyes-- Click on the method that is appropriate for your project for the instructions.

  • If you want to dye a piece of fabric one color, you want to use the vat dyeing process.
  • If you want to get multiple colors on one piece of fabric (the most common example is a tie-dye) use "the direct method"-- also known as the squeeze bottle method.
  • Tie-dye is a great group project. Check out our hints for groups page.
  • Hints and Important things you need to know!

  • You can store the powder and auxillary products for a long period of time providing they are kept in a cool and dry place. Once they are exposed to moisture, they begin to degrade.
  • Dyes are transparent. That means you need to remember all those things they taught you in grade school about mixing colors. If you have a yellow shirt, and you dye it blue... you will end up with green.
  • Procion dyes are considered safe when used properly. Inhalation of the powder can cause an allergic reaction in some people, so wearing a dust mask while handling the powder is suggested.
  • Given the chance, the dye solution will stain clothing, hands, tables etc.... Gloves are suggested for your hands, plastic sheeting is suggested for your work area and don't do it where you have white carpet!

    Other important things....

  • Soda ash is the setting agent for Procion Mx dyes. It is a very important part of the process. If you are vat dyeing, you will need between 1/4 cup for light colors and 1 1/4 cup for dark saturated colors, per 3 gallons of water. Check out the proportions HERE!. If you are tie-dyeing you using the soda-soak method, you will need 1 cup per gallon of water. There is about 1 1/2 cups per pound of soda ash.
  • Urea is a wetting agent that is used when you are tie-dyeing to keep the fabric moist while the color is setting. Use about 1 tablespoon per 8oz of water. About 15 tablespoons per pound of urea. It is a brightener. Not absolutely necessary to the process but nice to have.
  • Synthrapol is mild washing soap that suspends fugitive dye so that it does not reattach to the fabric and muddy the color. It is also a very good prewash to get out any sizing which is present. Not absolutely necessary to the process but nice to have.
